**Opening Song**

``Sunny Spot''
Lyrics, music, & sung by Kouzou Murashita,
Arranged by Kimio Mizutani.

``Want to meet you soon'', those words
I want to shout from the bottom of my heart.
I believed that someday we'll meet and be knot.

Once I start walking, I want you to chase my back.
Oh, I'm alone just for you.

In the afternoon of spring, when flower leaves fly around,
I'll change a prayer to a promise.

Don't you forget the most important thing, and
please keep shining.

			--------------------

Scene - The club house of the tennis club:

-(Kyoko and Ichinoce are walking down the hallway.)

Ichinoce: It's finally tomorrow for Coach Mitaka, right?

Kyoko: umhuh

-(As they walk down the hallway, they notice their fellow members
flocking together.)

Ichinoce: What're you doing?

Lady 1: Writing messages.

Ichinoce: Messages?

Lady 2: Tomorrow is the wedding of Coach Mitaka, right? So, we
decided to write a line or two on the racket cover for him.

Lady 3: Why don't you two write something?

Ichinoce: Good idea. First, Kanrinin-san.

Lady 2: There. (she hands over the racket and pen to Kyoko)
Don't you have something to say to Coach Mitaka?

Kyoko: Huh?...not really...

Ichinoce: Why don't you say a reproach or two, like ``thanks for
dumping me'' or something.

Kyoko: Why can't you celebrate somebody's good fortune the right way?

-(In the center of the racket cover, she writes down, ``Hope you'll be
happy forever. Kyoko Otonashi'', while others are writing that they're always
ready for an affair, or two. )

Scene - A church, next day:

-(The wedding of Shun Mitaka and Asuna Kujou begins. As everybody
looks on, Asuna's father accompanies his daughter, walks up to Mitaka,

Scene - Ikkoku-kan's room #5, that night:

-(The tenants are celebrating the wedding on their own.)

Yotsuya: Now.. to envy.. I mean, to celebrate Mitaka-san's wedding...

Everybody: CHEERS!!!

Akemi: The wedding reception is at the Imperial Hotel, right?

Godai: umhuh.

Yotsuya: I really wanted to taste the French food of that first
class hotel...

Ichinoce: The honeymoon is from Greece to Spain, cruise around Aegean
sea...

Yotsuya: hmmmm, Kanrinin-san missed such a good opportunity.

Akemi: Really.

 -(The three stare at Godai.)

Godai: ?

Ichinoce: What did she do to deserve this guy ?....

Godai: Leave me alone..

Akemi: Where's Kanrinin-san?

Godai: She was cooking something..

Yotsuya: I guess I'll have to put up with Kanrinin-san's home made
cooking. (instead of the French food)

Godai: If you don't want to, you don't have to eat, you know?

Yotsuya: My ears are ass's ears..

Ichinoce: By the way, Godai-kun, how far have you two gone?

Godai: !! (spits out beer) We.....err... (blushes)

Ichinoce: What're you thinking about? I mean, like the betrothal gifts, the
date of the wedding and things like that. Haven't you started making plans?

Godai: No...not yet.

Akemi: I heard that Kanrinin-san's parents gave their permission.

Godai: Well.... yes.

Ichinoce: Well, the next step is to introduce Kanrinin-san to your parents,
isn't it?

Godai: ..sure..

Akemi: Such a slow guy.

Yotsuya: If you don't hurry, Kanrinin-san might change her mind.

Scene - Kyoko's room:

-(Godai knocks. Inside, Kyoko is putting some dishes on a tray.)

Kyoko: Yes? Come in.

 -(Godai enters her room.)

Godai: er..

Kyoko: I was just about to take these upstairs..

Godai: er..

Kyoko: Yes?

Godai: Will you go to Nigata, soon...with me?

Kyoko: ?

Godai: I want to formally introduce you to my grandma and parents.

Kyoko: (nods slightly)

Godai: YOU CAN?

Kyoko: Yes

Godai: Then, I'll phone them, right now!

Kyoko: !?

Scene - Godai's home:

-(Grandma is answering the phone from Yuhsaku, while his stunned parents
are staring at grandma.)

Grandma: Getting married? I see...great, Yuhsaku....You did it!!

Scene - Ikkoku-kan:

Godai: ..so I'm taking a day-off and..

Godai: WHAT???

Scene - Kyoko's room:

Kyoko: To..tomorrow?

Godai: I'm sorry.. she's selfish like that.. we don't have
to...besides you might have some other plans...

Kyoko: I'll be free to go...

Godai: !

Kyoko: Sooner or later, I have to visit them, so..

Godai: Kyo...Kyoko-san!

-(The door opens behind them.. The usual faces are there)

Ichinoce, Yotsuya & Akemi: Congratulations!!!!

Yotsuya: We heard everything..

Ichinoce: You did it!

Godai: Wha..what are you doing here?!!

Ichinoce: You were taking too long, so we decided to come
down here.

Akemi: Good going, Godai-kun.

Yotsuya: Weelll, it was such a long spring

makeup, while Ichinoce looks on. Ichinoce is eating potato chips.)

Kyoko: Do you think that's too much? (the makeup)

Ichinoce: Not really.

-(Kyoko stares into the mirror, then wipes off the lipstick.
She takes out a dress and turns to Ichinoce.)

Kyoko: It's not too flashy, is it?

Ichinoce: Not really. (munch, munch)

-(Kyoko looks around her wardrobe and takes out another one.)

Ichinoce: Don't worry about us, and have a nice trip.

Akemi: Say hi to grandma.

Godai: Bye.

Kyoko: See you later, Souichiro-san

Souichiro: ``bow! wow!'' (as if he understands what she said.)

-(The three tenants look on as Godai and Kyoko leave.)

Ichinoce: I wonder if Kanrinin-san will be fine..She was pretty
nervous about it..

Akemi: Obviously..she's older and this is her second marriage. Even though
Godai-kun wants to, I wonder if his parents will approve...

Ichinoce: Local folks are pretty strict about those kind of things..

Yotsuya: I wouldn't worry. If he took Akemi-san home, his parents
would definitely be surprised.

Akemi: (sharply) Oh?

-(Ichinoce is trying to swallow her laugh)

Scene - Onboard the ``Jouetsu Shinkansen'' (bullet train):

Kyoko: (sigh)

Godai: What is it?

Mom: Oh, welcome back

Godai: ``Thanks'', why did you open on this important day?

Dad: Well,..we were planning to close the restaurant and wait for you two, but..

Mom: Grandma insisted to open it.

Godai: GRANDMA! Why did you?!

Dad: Thank you very much.

Kyoko: No problem..

Godai: Kyoko-san!

Godai: I just got a permanent job, so I'm just starting to..

Grandma: Are you going to make Kyoko-san wait till you have enough? (she

is called the Fifth Bank. In that region of Japan, there actually is
a bank called the Fourth Bank.] Use this...

Godai: ?

Grandma: Then, You will take this ring?

Kyoko: Yes, with gratitude.

Grandma: (stands up, and shouts outside.) Yuhsaku!!

Grandma: Stop grumbling and sit down

Godai: ? (sits down)

Grandma: (hands the ring to Godai) Put this ring on Kyoko-san.

Godai: ?.... (looking at the ring) What's this?

Grandma: Stop asking questions!

-(Godai now understands grandma's intention. He, blushing, puts the ring
on Kyoko's finger.)

Grandma: Now, I feel relieved. (she closes her eyes, and stops moving.)

Godai: Grandma? Grandma?

Kyoko: Grandmother? (grandma doesn't respond.)

Mom: (to Godai's neighbors) I heard that you people helped
Yuhsaku, a lot.

Yotsuya: It's some sort of coincidence that we became neighbors.

[footnote: in the original Japanese line, Yotsuya said ``en'' to mean
``coincidence'' and in Japanese ``yen'' is pronounced ``en'' so he makes
a bad pun, saying, ``It's some sort of fifty yen that we became neighbors.'']

Akemi: (to dad) There you go. (pours sake) Let's empty it.

Dad: Oh, Thank you

Ichinoce: Come on, Kanrinin-san, and Godai-kun, smile a bit more. To
celebrate the future of these two, let's drink all night!!

Godai: (sigh)

Scene - A shot of Godai family's house from outside:

-(Looks like the party will actually last till next morning. Inside, Godai
is gloomy. He's taking a tray to the kitchen.)

Godai: So, what's different here now, from the apartment (Ikkoku-kan)?

Mom: Oh, sake is over here.

Godai: ?..Where's Kyoko-san?

Mom: She's not here?

Godai: ?

Scene - Godai's old room:

-(Kyoko is looking around. She fingers through books titled ``The
Collection of Great Japanese Literature'', and takes out a volume.

Godai: (walking into the room) I got them from grandma.

Kyoko: !

Kyoko: Not really.. Godai-san, was this your room?

Godai: Yes..until I graduated high school and moved to Ikkoku-kan..

 -(He ignites the heater.)

Kyoko: (looking around the desk and notices a photo) This?

-(Godai turns the heater towards Kyoko and walks to the desk)

Godai: Oh, the one with everybody in the rugby club. Everybody
is laughing, but this was taken after the game where we got wiped out.

Kyoko: But, still..everybody looks happy.

-(She puts down the photo, and walks to the window. The outside is
snowing.)

Kyoko: So, you grew up seeing the town like this...

Godai: Yes....

-(Godai hold Kyoko's shoulder. They cuddle each other. They look
outside.)

Kyoko: Looks so beautiful.

Scene - Camera zooms away from Godai's house:

Godai: (off) GRANDMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ichinoce: (off) Come on..To celebrate their future, let's party!!!!

-(The night in this house will be reaallly looong, for sure. I wonder if
``Godai's'' will open next day?)

Ending song (TV version).

``Begin the Night''
Music, arrangement, & sung by Picasso.
Lyrics by Etsuko.

Begin the night, begin your love
It's not a love by chance, can't you see? Kiss, too, is wooo

Cooly you shut your mouth, saying you like to be alone.
Don't overstrain yourself, in the night like candle leaning to each other

Gaze at everything
Blow away the lies you said till now.

Begin the night, begin your love.
Self-satisfying mystery {it(-ous in Japanese version))
doesn't work against me, wooo...
